Quick answer

Four moves, all free:

  1. Open PDFZora’s Sign PDF tool.
  2. Upload the file (drag and drop, or Select PDF).
  3. Draw, type, or upload your signature.
  4. Drop it on the signature line, resize, and download.

That’s the whole job: an ordinary PDF with your signature on the page, ready to email or upload. Most people finish in under a minute.

We use PDFZora’s Sign PDF because it asks for nothing in return: no account, no trial, no watermark on your file. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, uploads travel over 256-bit SSL, and PDFZora says files are deleted from its servers after 60 minutes. The limit is 20 MB per file.

Sign PDF Free

  1. Upload your PDF

Open the tool and drop the file in, or click Select PDF. On a phone, pull it straight from mail, downloads, or your cloud drive.

  2. Create your signature

Three options, all free. Draw it with a mouse, finger, or stylus for the natural look. Type your name into a handwriting-style font for speed. Or photograph a signature on white paper and upload it when the other side expects your real mark. Create it once, reuse it after that.

  3. Place it carefully

Put the signature above the line, not on printed names or dates. Then check the rest of the document: multi-page contracts often want initials on every page, and a date field is easy to miss. Fill every form field before downloading, because editing later means starting over.

  4. Download and check

Save the file, reopen it once, and check the signature landed on the right page. Keep a copy and the email that asked you to sign. If the document is sensitive, lock it with a password and send that password separately.

Free ways to sign without uploading anything

Prefer not to upload at all? Your device probably includes a signer.

Mac & iPhone

Open the PDF in Preview, click Markup, then Sign. Build it on the trackpad, with the camera, or on your iPhone. On iOS: Markup, +, Signature.

Windows & Android

The free Adobe Acrobat Reader has Fill & Sign: type, draw, or pick an image, place it, save. Editing text and images needs a paid plan.

Any browser

PDFZora Sign PDF works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, handy when the machine in front of you is not yours.

For everyday agreements, usually yes. An electronic signature is any mark that shows agreement: a typed name, a drawn mark, an uploaded image. A digital signature is narrower: certificate-based cryptography of the kind NIST standardizes in FIPS 186-5, which lets a verifier confirm the signer and detect later changes. PDFZora creates the first kind, which most contracts ask for.

🇺🇸 United States

The ESIGN Act says a signature cannot be denied legal effect solely because it is electronic, and most states have adopted UETA. Courts look for intent to sign, consent to transact electronically, and a retained copy.

🇪🇺 European Union

eIDAS sets three levels: simple, advanced, qualified. A typed or drawn mark is a simple electronic signature, admissible but weighed case by case. Only a qualified signature carries the guaranteed force of handwriting.

🇮🇳 India

The IT Act, 2000 recognizes electronic signatures under Section 5 and electronic contracts under Section 10A. Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and property sale deeds are excluded.

Where typing usually is not enough: wills, adoption and divorce papers, court filings, eviction or foreclosure notices on a primary residence, and some insurance cancellation notices fall outside e-signature law or follow separate rules. Notarized documents may need their own process. When a document matters, ask the recipient what they accept.

General information, not legal advice. Rules vary by country and state.

Six mistakes worth avoiding

  1. Signing before reading the last page, where extra signature boxes hide.

  2. Covering printed text. Zoom in and keep it above the line.

  3. Uploading a blurry signature photo. Use white paper and daylight.

  4. Emailing sensitive files unprotected. Password-protect the file and send the password separately.

  5. Assuming every document accepts e-signatures. Check the list above or ask.

  6. Deleting the trail. Keep the signed PDF and the request behind it.
