Your exact age is a three-part subtraction: days, months and years, plus one leap-year rule.
Quick answer

To calculate your exact age, subtract your birth date from today's date in three parts: days first, then months, then years. If a part goes below zero, borrow from the larger unit (a month for days, a year for months). For total days lived, count every calendar day between the two dates, leap days included. Or skip the arithmetic and use the free calculator below.

How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Days, Months, and Years by Hand

All you need to calculate your exact age is today's date and your date of birth.

  1. Write both dates as year-month-day

Put today's date on top and your birth date underneath. Writing both as YYYY-MM-DD stops the day and month from getting swapped.

  2. Subtract the days

If the result is negative, borrow one month: add the number of days in the month before the current one (31 for August, 28 or 29 for February).

  3. Subtract the months

Take 1 off if you borrowed in step 2. If the result is negative, borrow one year: add 12.

  4. Subtract the years

Take 1 off if you borrowed in step 3. That is your age in years, months and days.

Worked example: born 30 November 1990, age on 26 September 2026
UnitCalculationResult
Days26 − 30 = −4 → borrow a month: −4 + 31 (days in August)27 days
Months9 − 11 = −2, minus 1 borrowed = −3 → borrow a year: −3 + 129 months
Years2026 − 1990 = 36, minus 1 borrowed35 years
Exact age: 35 years, 9 months, 27 days

Babies and toddlers: quote the age in months, i.e. (years × 12) + months, plus any leftover days. Clinics work in completed weeks and months because growth charts compare a child’s height, weight and head size with other children of the same age (MedlinePlus, U.S. National Library of Medicine).

How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Total Days

Months are not all the same length and leap years have 366 days, so total days needs its own count:

  1. Count the days from your birth date to the end of your birth year.
  2. Add 365 for every full year in between (366 for each leap year).
  3. Add the days from 1 January of this year to today. Divide by 7 for weeks.

Leap years: a year is actually about 365.24 days long, so an extra day is added every fourth year. Century years are the exception: they are leap years only if they are divisible by 400. That’s why 2000 and 2024 were leap years but 1900 wasn’t, and 2100 won’t be (NIST).

Shortcut: whole years × 365.25, plus the days since your last birthday, usually lands within a day of the true figure. Someone turning 30 has lived 10,957 or 10,958 days, depending on whether seven or eight leap days fell in those years.

Mistakes to Avoid When You Calculate Your Exact Age

  • Borrowing 30 days every time. Use the real length of the previous month: 31 for August, 28 or 29 for February.

  • Forgetting leap days. Years × 365 drops a day roughly every four years, which leaves you about 10 days short by age 40.

  • Mixing up date formats. 04/06/2020 is 4 June in India and the UK but 6 April in the US. Writing dates year first (YYYY-MM-DD, the ISO 8601 order) removes the doubt. It’s the format San José State University Library recommends so that a date is read the same way by everyone.

  • Using today instead of the "as of" date. Admissions, exams and job applications often specify age "as on" a cut-off date. Calculate against that date, not today.

Why Your Exact Age Matters

Rounding to whole years is fine in conversation. In these situations you need to calculate your exact age:

Health and development

Growth charts, immunisation schedules and screening programmes are all age-based: weeks or months for infants, exact years for adults.

Legal and admin deadlines

School entry, exam eligibility, voting, driving and pension rules hinge on reaching an age by a set date. Seventeen years and 364 days does not meet "18 as on 1 January". Rules can even differ: U.S. Social Security counts you as reaching an age the day before your birthday (20 CFR § 404.2).

Financial planning

Insurance premiums, retirement-account access and benefit eligibility are tied to age bands. Knowing the exact crossover date helps you time an application.

FAQs: calculate your exact age in days, months, and years

How do I calculate my exact age in days, months, and years manually?

To calculate your exact age by hand, subtract the days, then the months, then the years. If the days go negative, add the previous month's length and take one off the months; if the months go negative, add 12 and take one off the years. For total days, count every day between the two dates, leap days included.

How many days old is a 30-year-old?

10,957 or 10,958 days on their 30th birthday, depending on whether seven or eight leap days fell in those years, plus however many days have passed since that birthday.

Why do different age calculators show different results?

Total days and completed years should agree across tools (a 29 February birthday is the one grey area). The months-and-days split can differ by a day because tools handle end-of-month birthdays and borrowed months differently, or work in UTC rather than your local date.

How do I calculate my age on a specific date, such as an admission cut-off?

Use the cut-off date in place of today's date. In the calculator above, enter it in the "Age as of" field and it will calculate your exact age on that day.

What if I was born on 29 February?

You still turn a year older every year. In non-leap years, whether 28 February or 1 March counts as your birthday depends on local rules, so check the relevant regulation if it matters legally. The calculator above uses 1 March.
